Shenzhen Metro Tops National Rankings in February for Operational Intensity

Shenzhen, China – The Shenzhen Metro system has once again secured its position as the most efficient and intensively operated urban rail network in China, according to the February 2025 Urban Rail Transit Operation Report released by the Ministry of Transport. The report highlights Shenzhen’s dominance in key metrics, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in urban mobility.

Unmatched Passenger Intensity

One of the most notable achievements is Shenzhen’s passenger intensity, which reached an impressive 13,700 passengers per kilometer per day, ranking first nationwide. This marks the 15th consecutive month that Shenzhen has led in this category, reflecting the city’s efficient utilization of its metro network to accommodate high commuter demand.

Shenzhen’s line network density also stood out, measuring 0.30 kilometers per square kilometer, the highest in China. This indicates that Shenzhen’s metro system provides exceptional urban coverage, ensuring accessibility and convenience for millions of residents and visitors daily.

High Passenger Throughput

Beyond operational intensity, Shenzhen Metro also ranks among the top cities for total passenger flow.

  • The system recorded a daily average of 4.46 million station entries, placing third nationwide.
  • Its daily passenger volume reached 7.88 million, securing the fourth spot in China.

These figures demonstrate Shenzhen’s well-integrated and highly utilized metro network, playing a crucial role in supporting the city’s fast-paced urban lifestyle and economic activities.

Why Shenzhen Leads the Way

Several factors contribute to Shenzhen Metro’s outstanding performance:

  1. Expanding Metro Infrastructure – Shenzhen has continuously invested in metro expansion, increasing connectivity across the city and surrounding regions.
  2. Smart Transportation Technology – The integration of AI-driven crowd management, digital ticketing, and automated operations enhances efficiency and passenger experience.
  3. High Urban Density & Commuter Demand – As a leading tech and financial hub, Shenzhen’s population relies heavily on metro transit for daily commutes.

Shenzhen’s Future in Urban Transit

With ongoing metro expansions and technological advancements, Shenzhen Metro is expected to maintain its leadership in operational efficiency. As the city continues to evolve into a global innovation hub, its metro system will remain a vital pillar of its sustainable urban development, ensuring seamless mobility for millions.
