Longhua District Achieves Full Coverage of Elderly Canteens in Streets and Aging Communities

Longhua District in Shenzhen has made significant strides in supporting its aging population by expanding access to elderly meal services. In recent years, the district has prioritized the development of elderly canteens, introducing supportive policies to promote inclusive, affordable dining options for seniors in both urban streets and aging residential communities.

To date, Longhua has established a total of 35 elderly canteens or meal assistance points, including 6 fully functional elderly canteens. With this development, the district has effectively achieved full coverage across all subdistricts and key aging communities, ensuring that senior residents have convenient and affordable access to hot, nutritious meals close to home.

This initiative reflects Longhua’s commitment to enhancing the well-being, dignity, and quality of life of its elderly population. The canteens are designed not only as places to eat but also as community hubs where seniors can socialize, access basic health services, and participate in recreational activities.

The implementation of these services follows a set of elderly meal subsidy policies, which help reduce the financial burden on low-income or solitary seniors. Meal costs are partially subsidized by the government, and in many locations, volunteer organizations and community workers also assist with meal preparation and delivery for those with limited mobility.

By prioritizing elderly care through practical and people-centered approaches, Longhua District is setting a model for age-friendly urban development in the Greater Bay Area. As the district continues to age, this coverage of community-based meal services ensures that no senior is left behind, and that care and dignity remain at the heart of urban planning.
