As the countdown to the 15th National Games intensifies, Shenzhen’s venues are entering the final stages of preparation. Among them, the Shenzhen Universiade Center—a landmark sports complex in Longgang District—has completed a comprehensive upgrade to meet international competition standards and offer a more inclusive and intelligent environment for spectators.
A Renewed Sports Icon with International Standards
Located in western Longgang Central City, the Universiade Center spans over 520,000 square meters, housing a stadium, gymnasium, and natatorium with a total floor area of nearly 290,000 square meters. It has hosted prestigious events including the 2011 Summer Universiade, FINA Champions Series, French Super Cup, ICC, CBA League, and the Asian Cup of Table Tennis.
The recent renovation elevates the venue to new heights. The stadium now features high-resolution LED displays that meet IAAF and FIFA standards, and the track has obtained IAAF Class 1 certification, placing it among China’s elite athletics venues—second only to the Bird’s Nest in Beijing.
The playing surface and turf have also been fully refurbished, addressing long-standing wear and tear issues and restoring the venue’s premium appearance.
Upgraded Accessibility & Smart Technology
To deliver on its commitment to human warmth and technological efficiency, the renovation prioritized accessibility and smart upgrades. New accessible seating areas and restrooms have been added, in full compliance with the latest national standards. Additional accessible parking bays and drop-off zones ensure a smoother experience for spectators with special needs.
Information infrastructure has also received a major boost. With full Wi-Fi coverage, intelligent surveillance, and enhanced cybersecurity, the venue is now ready to deliver a safe and connected experience for all.
Tensile Fabric Structures Add Functional Elegance
One of the standout architectural elements in the upgrade is the use of tensile fabric structures. These modern, lightweight canopies were installed across key spectator areas, entry zones, and auxiliary spaces, providing sun protection, improved ventilation, and a futuristic aesthetic that complements the center’s modern identity. The tensile membranes were supplied and installed by top-tier tensile structure companies, ensuring both design excellence and structural integrity. The use of tensile membranes also reflects Shenzhen’s green and sustainable design philosophy, allowing for long-span coverage with minimal structural interference.
Setting a Benchmark for Future Events
According to preliminary assessments by the Provincial Games Organizing Committee, the Universiade Center was among the first venues in Shenzhen to pass inspection, earning praise for its benchmark-level accessibility and digital transformation.
