First Gold Medal Awarded at Shenzhen Leg of China’s National Para and Special Olympics
The first gold medal of the Shenzhen division of China’s 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and 9th Special Olympics (commonly known as the Para and Special Olympics) has been awarded.
On July 1, the cycling competition officially began at the Longgang International Cycling Stadium in Shenzhen. The opening day saw top para-athletes from across the country gather to test their limits in one of the most anticipated events on the schedule: the women’s 3-kilometer individual pursuit final.
After an intense and closely contested race, Qian Wangwei, representing the Liaoning team, clinched the championship title. Not only did she win the first gold medal of the Shenzhen leg, but she also broke the national record—a record she herself had set previously. Her performance was a powerful display of determination and athletic excellence, setting an inspiring tone for the remainder of the competition.
This year’s Games bring together athletes with disabilities and special needs from all over China, competing in multiple disciplines that celebrate both high performance and inclusive sportsmanship. The cycling events in Shenzhen have attracted considerable attention, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a premier host for major sporting events.
Organizers noted that the opening races demonstrated the spirit of perseverance and solidarity at the heart of the Para and Special Olympics movement. As athletes crossed the finish line, cheers erupted from coaches, teammates, and spectators alike, underscoring the community’s shared commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities in achieving their dreams.
Over the coming days, Shenzhen will host a variety of cycling competitions, with both men and women vying for medals in time trials and pursuit races. Officials have implemented meticulous planning to ensure the event meets national standards of accessibility, safety, and fairness.
The National Para and Special Olympics serve as the country’s highest-level sporting platform for athletes with disabilities. In addition to competition, the Games aim to promote understanding, respect, and inclusion across society.
Qian Wangwei’s record-breaking victory on day one has inspired her fellow competitors and supporters nationwide. As the Shenzhen events continue, more remarkable stories of talent, courage, and achievement are expected to unfold on the track.
